Putting our high-resolution photographs on my VLD (very large desktop) as a computer background or wallpaper picture, I often forget that many people are working with much smaller screens. Now that iPad wallpaper is becoming a big thing (so many iPads to wallpaper, so little time), we thought we'd go through our archives and find some shots that work better for crowded screens where the icons need a cool place to reside so they don't muck up the shot too much. The result is this collection, which includes some new shots with some of our old favorites, that we think are soft enough, or have a cool space for, icons to float above. Throw these babies in as your iPad wallpaper and let us know how they look!

Bethlehem PA was once the heart of America's steel industry. This abandoned steel mill sits alongside the Lehigh River, next to a casino.

Spend a few hours in our backyard and you'd be amazed at the abundance of wildlife that will come close enough for a big lens to capture up-close and personal! These wildlife pictures are mostly of birds, including a particularly brave black-capped chickadee, an oblivious dark-eyed junco, and a very nervous hairy woodpecker.

Well, that was a weird winter. Lots of warm days, a few really cold days, and one very large, wet snow storm. Now as what's left of the snow babbles its way down the hill, I've looked back over our photographs from this winter and put together this little collection of upstate New York winter photography that should make great desktop wallpaper of free computer backgrounds for your desktop or web page backgrounds.

I don't do much post production work on my photography. We just take the pictures and put them out there. But occasionally we see post work on photography that just blows our socks off. Recently, we posted some underwater photography from Mike Eilers. Now we've heard from Mike's friend Carl Bringas, who is a photography and a post production photo touch up wizard, as you can see from these works of art. The whale and sea turtle are Mike Eiler's photos touched up by Carl. Go look at the originals in the underwater series, and you'll see what a difference a good touch up person can make!

Here's some bird wallpaper for the bird brained linkerati! The bird feeder on our back porch has attracted, so far, over 40 species of birds. We got the telephoto lens to take better pictures of these fine-feathered friends, and here's the first crop, including our favorite, the red bellied woodpecker, which is really an orange mohawked woodpecker that we call Ziggy.

These free computer backgrounds of winter scenes from around Cooperstown NY include the Major League Baseball Hall of Fame, picturesque Main Street, the town statue of James Fenmore Cooper, and the headwaters of the Susquehanna River. These literally cool backgrounds for computer screens were taken right after a major snow storm, and Cooperstown covered in snow is storybook beautiful, perfect for winter wallpaper pictures and free wallpaper pictures.

Here are a few winter scenes from around Cherry Valley, NY. A few of these winter photographs for desktop wallpaper are vertically oriented, and sized to 1080 pixels high, which makes them only 720 wide. However, if you like having desktop background color bars on either side of your computer background photograph, then these are perfect. Those bars make a nice place to put your icons.

My friend Cherie Attix, who runs the Hale Hookipa Inn, a Maui bed and breakfast, sent these pictures from her friend, Mike Eilers, an avid scuba diver and snorkeler. He's agreed to let us post these beautiful underwater shots for use as computer backgrounds and free desktop wallpaper.

Her motion captured long exposure of lights creates abstract photography that makes great computer backgrounds and can also be used for a wide variety of graphic arts projects. Here are some icy scenes we've been collecting for a while. Some are just cool photographs of winter landscapes, but a few are taken through an icy window specifically with computer backgrounds (or desktop wallpaper) in mind. Note the frosty foreground as a place to put all your desktop icons, with a view out the window to be left uncovered. These shots are all from upstate New York, in the Central region, also known as the Central Leatherstocking region.

These photographs of the Hawaiian Island of Kauai were taken by Pamela Fridie, owner of the Hale Kilo I'a, or House Where You Watch Fish, a northshore Kauai beach house rental that is, as you can see, literally at the end of the rainbow. These high-resolution Hawaii pictures were taken around the vacation rental house and the island of Kauai. Full size high-resolution versions are available at the Kauai beach house web site.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame doesn't let you take cameras into the actual museum, but the building is awesome, and you are allowed to take pictures inside, just not in the museum.

Nectar Hills Farm is run by our friends Sonia Sola and Dave Dutton. They raise the Highland cattle that we use in our Happy Hobo Grass-fed beef jerky. The central New York farm (near Cherry Valley and Cooperstown) is near the Betty and Wilbur Davis State Park, which is almost indescribably scenic, with views of central New York's mountains that stretch for miles, as you can see in these photographs taken by Robin Supak.

If only for the pizza! We left South Dakota, tried to make up some time, and hit a snow storm in Wisconsin in which large snowballs were being hurled at the car by some angry gravity and wind. I had never seen snow that size not hurled by a human! And then, finally, after a few more crappy mattresses, we made it to Chicago, hungry, on the prowl for deep-dish pizza. When we got to the south side, we stopped, and I walked up to the first person I saw, a huge guy who looked like a former NFL tackle, told him we were driving across the country and we were looking for the best deep-dish pizza. He said, "Oh, right down the street: Pizza Nova! We took our pie to Lake Michigan, nice little park by the Indiana border, and it was fantastic!

I always had a vision of Mount Rushmore being in the middle of a big, flat prairie, jutting up with a few other Disneyesque Western rock formations called the Black Hills. I was surprised and happy to find that the Black Hills are actually small mountains, and that Mount Rushmore is way up there, surrounded by beautiful peaks and forests. I loved it. It felt like a good place to live, secluded without being boring, beautiful without being over-run (of course, we were there in April and it was snowing)...

Bear Mountain Wyoming sticks up out of the plains of eastern central Wyoming like something out of a Cormac McCarthy novel. These shots were taken looking east from US 287, between Rawlins and Muddy Gap. We were on our way to South Dakota and Mt. Rushmore. It was early April, the snow was melting, and it was breathtaking, especially if you like the high plains of the west...

Yeah, we were hauling ass... After staying in one of the worst motels ever (in Lovelock: honestly, keep driving), we were amazed by the scenery of northern Nevada, all the way to the great Salt Flats of northeastern Utah, and past Salt Lake City through Park City (before it got dark)

This is part of my wife Robin's abstract photography series, which she continued during our move across the country. Her light and motion technique captures the blurriness with which I now remember our 80 mile an hour, non-stop blast through the Donner Pass and Reno.

These surrealistic pictures taken during the Canyon Country fire in Southern California prove that lighting is everything in photography. The photographs by Robin Supak capture the eerie look created by the smoke filtering the sunlight.

Here's a few shots of a great day at Yankee stadium, perfect for desktop wallpaper or even a web page background. These shots were taken during a 2006 interleague game with the Atlanta Braves. This is the day that A-Rod hit a walk off home run in the tenth inning to win it.

Photography of Hawaii that's great to use as desktop wallpaper pictures. From hot lava flowing into the ocean in Volcanoes National Park on the Big Island of Hawaii, to the wooded, mossy trails of Poli Poli State Park on the slopes of Haleakala, we have some terrific Hawaii pictures for desktop wallpapers of computer backgrounds. NYC pictures to use as computer wallpaper or web site backgrounds. I suggest resizing them for your desktop or brightening them if you want to use them as a free web page background, so they don't interfere with reading the text. We have shots from the Helmsley Hotel on east 42nd Street that I took while sticking the camera out the window of the 40th floor. These include great shots of east midtown, including the Chrysler building. We also have shots from the top of the Empire State Building in all directions. They make really nice NYC backgrounds.

New York pictures of the Catskills Mountains and central New York, including Woodstock, Hunter Mountain, Hurley, and surrounding areas. If you're into nature wallpaper, you'll love the shots of Sawkill Creek, and the creek near West Shokan that I we don't remember the name of. There are also shots of the view from the site of the old Hotel Kaaterskill, and from the hike up South Mountain.

Desktop wallpaper pictures of Maine. These are all inland Maine pictures, no pictures of the coast yet. Odd, but when I visit my Granpa in Maine, we hang out at his place on the lake, and don't get down to the coast much.

Downtown Los Angeles pictures make cool city wallpaper. Includes photographs of the Music Center Theaters: The Ahmanson, The Mark Taper Forum, and The Dorothy Chandler Pavillion, and The Disney Hall. Also features backstage and downside up wallpaper pictures like legitimate theater photographs and other things not often seen.

Part of my Hollywood Downside Up series of photos showing famous Hollywood landmarks in a less than flattering light. Some of these are just good shots of Hollywood that didn't really fit the theme of the Hollywood Downside Up photography essay. For instance, there's a glamor shot of the Hollywood Sign, and then there's one as most of the people who actually live and work in Hollywood see it: in the distance behind a beat up old car in a run down neighborhood. We have pictures of wall murals, a picture of John Lennon's star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and a picture of the Beatles' star the day after George Harrison died.
